Shopping the Perimeter
Do you ever make it to the grocery store, walk through the parking lot, go through the doors, and BAM! That overwhelming feeling just hits. Colors, smells, labels everywhere. This makes eating healthy feel like a chore. But the best tip I have ever heard is to 'Shop the Perimeter.'
The less processed foods are usually on the edges (ie., vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy). The bakery is on the perimeter - yes - but proceed with caution. It may have some whole grains you need, just be careful of the added sugars and refined flour items in this area.
Another bonus, this simplifies your grocery trip x10.
Don't avoid the inner aisles - just shop the inner aisles with intention. Stick to your list you made before you came to the store and focus on pantry items:
- Healthy fats
- Spices and herbs
- Canned goods (low-sodium version)
The next time you go to the grocery store, try this:
- Start in Produce. Shop the rainbow for colorful fruits and vegetables.
- Meat and Seafood for lean, fresh cuts.
- Dairy. Look for low-fat and unsweetened.
- Bakery (if you must) for whole grains.
- Use a list for the inner aisles.
