What Should I Eat Before Exercise?

That is a loaded question. What you should eat before you exercise depends on a ton of factors:

  • How much time do you have between eating and exercise?
  • How intense will your workout be?
  • How long will your workout be?
  • What kind of workout will you be doing?
  • What are your body composition goals?

Low-Intensity Workout:
If you plan to do a low-intensity, mostly cardio session first thing in the morning, you could probably just wake up and go. Or, you can grab a quick carb snack that is easy to digest, like a banana with a piece of toast or a granola bar.

High-Intensity Workout:
If you have a higher-intensity workout planned, you will need to eat further in advance. Most people need at least 1-2 hours between eating a meal and a hard workout. If your plan is weight training, then make sure to include carbs and protein in your pre-workout meal, like oatmeal, Greek yogurt and berries, or a protein shake containing fruit. If you are planning a long endurance type of workout like biking, hiking, etc., you would probably feel the best with a pre-workout plan of balanced carbs, protein, and healthy fat. Something like a bagel with peanut butter and banana or grapes.
